Since 1981, Second Harvest Gleaners Food Bank of West Michigan, Inc. has
served as West Michigan's regional nonprofit clearinghouse for saved,
donated food on its way from the food industry to churches and charity
agencies that assist needy people.
The food we distribute is drawn primarily from the surpluses and edible/useable errors of local and national food and grocery products companies. Through our seven warehouses, we serve 1,200+ food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, domestic violence shelters,
rescue missions, and other charity agencies across 40 Michigan counties (the western third of the Lower Peninsula and entire Upper Peninsula) who in turn provide that food aid to approximately 400,000 needy residents of West Michigan each year. In 2007, we distributed 20.3 million pounds of food and other goods, that's almost a million pounds every 19 days!

Second Harvest Gleaners is also a leading advocate for change in how communities tackle hunger. We believe ending hunger is achievable through the Waste-Not Want-Not approach, and we are seeking to prove that point by our own example. Please explore our web site for information on that good work, and how you can be a part of ending hunger in your community. |
